Virgin Atlantic had initially delayed the start of their route to Accra, but have now cancelled the route all together. Shoutout to @SeanM1997 for this catch.

Virgin Atlantic were meant to start flying from Heathrow to Accra on May 1st, operating once a day. The outbound route was timed to depart Heathrow at 10:30pm, landing in Accra at 5:00am the next day, with the return leg scheduled to depart at 9:15am, landing at Heathrow at 5:25pm.

In light of the war in Gaza, Virgin Atlantic terminated its twice daily flights to Tel Aviv, leaving a couple of aircraft free. Not just wanting to bolster capacity on another route, they made the bolder decision to try a few new routes. This included Accra, but also Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Cancun, Mexico. But Virgin's woes did not end there. Despite only announcing this route in September of 2024, in November they had to announce a postponement to the route due to problems with sourcing parts for the Rolls Royce engines on their Boeing 787 Dreamliner's. The new start date of this route was scheduled for October 26th 2025.

Now, this route will be added to the Virgin Atlantic graveyard of routes that never made it off the ground. This includes Heathrow to Sao Paolo, and Manchester to Delhi, Mumbai and Montego Bay.

The route has been removed from sale, leaving British Airways as the sole custodian, operating up to twice daily.

Now clearly something additionally has not gone to plan, whether the ticket sales were not living up to expectation, or they are suffering with more maintenance issues, but at the time of writing there has been no word from Virgin. Customers who have booked a ticket are being emailed with rebooking options.
