If you’re someone who loves collecting loyalty points, you’ve probably heard of Nectar and Avios. But did you know you can easily swap your points between the two? Whether you’re looking to treat yourself to a flight or snag a great deal at Sainsbury’s, Argos, and more, this partnership gives you plenty of flexibility in how you spend your rewards. Here’s how it works, and why it’s so great.

When it comes to converting your Nectar points into Avios, it’s pretty simple. For every 400 Nectar points, you’ll get 250 Avios in return. If you’re thinking about a getaway, this is a great way to boost your Avios balance so you can book a flight with British Airways or one of their partner airlines. It’s perfect for anyone who loves to travel and wants to use their everyday spending to rack up those travel rewards.
On the flip side, if you’ve collected a bunch of Avios but aren’t planning a trip anytime soon, you can convert 400 Avios into 400 Nectar points. Rounding that up a little, 500 Nectar points would give you £2.50 off of your Sainsburys or Argos shop. This is great if you’d prefer to use your points for everyday things like grocery shopping or buying new items at stores like Sainsbury’s or Argos. Essentially, you’re getting full value for your points, whether you’re flying or shopping.
One of the best things about this setup is how easy and quick it is to transfer your points. Converting Nectar points into Avios is instant, so if you want to put those points towards a flight or some other travel-related perks, you won’t have to wait around. However, when you’re converting Avios into Nectar points, it might take up to 12 days for the transfer to go through. While it’s a little longer, it’s still a quick and hassle-free way to get points for your shopping needs.
If you prefer not to deal with the manual process, there’s an auto-conversion option available. Once you opt in, your points will automatically be swapped between Nectar and Avios based on your preferences.
The beauty of this partnership is that you get to choose how you want to use your points. If you’re in the mood for travel, you can easily convert your Nectar points into Avios. But if you’re more into shopping, switching your Avios to Nectar points is a solid choice. Either way, you’re getting the most value out of your loyalty points.
A few intricacies to be aware of:
As mentioned, you can choose to set up auto-conversion, where each week the entirety of your Nectar balance will be automatically exchanged, up to the exchange limit. Balances are converted in increments of 400 Nectar points to 400 Avios.
You can convert up to a maximum of 50,000 Avios per calendar month (or 80,000 Nectar Points if trading in Avios). 25,200 Avios will be automatically converted per quarter in a calendar year.
You can also manually convert points as long as they are within the quarterly and the monthly limits as mentioned above. The limits are independent of one another.
Another thing to note is changing your Avios to nectar is really good if you are someone who doesn't want to redeem them on flights. Or has too few an amount. Say you went on holiday nearly two years ago using BA holidays. You got say 10,000 Avios, but they're nearly going to expire. Either add a single Avios to keep them going, or cash them in to nectar for real world value.
So next time you have some points to use, think about which conversion will give you the best reward. Happy collecting, and enjoy spending your hard-earned points!
